Dear ASVC Community,

As the weather warms up, many families and individuals with autism look forward to enjoying the water and engaging in water-related activities. My son Gavin loves the water! Whether it’s swimming in pools, visiting beaches, or simply splashing around in the backyard, water play can provide a refreshing and enjoyable experience for everyone. However, it is essential to prioritize safety and take extra precautions when it comes to water and individuals with autism.

Water-related incidents can pose significant risks for individuals with autism. At Autism Society Ventura County, we want to ensure that the water-related activities are enjoyable and safe for everyone. Here are some key tips and strategies to help promote water safety:

  1. Swim Lessons and Water Safety Education: Enrolling individuals with autism in swimming lessons is a valuable investment in their safety. Look for programs that offer specialized instruction for individuals with special needs or consider private lessons tailored to their specific needs. Additionally, teaching basic water safety skills, such as floating, treading water, and recognizing water hazards, can greatly enhance their safety awareness. Check with your local YMCA! Ventura Family YMCA has been a great resource for us.
  2. Supervision and Constant Vigilance: Whenever individuals with autism are near water, close supervision is crucial. Assign a dedicated water watcher or lifeguard to ensure constant supervision, especially during group outings or events.
  3. Visual Supports and Social Stories: Using visual supports and social stories can help individuals with autism understand and follow safety rules associated with water activities. Create visual schedules, cue cards, or social stories that depict appropriate behavior, rules, and guidelines for water-related activities.
  4. Sensory Considerations: Water isn’t fun for everyone! Water activities can be overwhelming for individuals with sensory sensitivities. Gradually introduce them to water environments, starting with small steps such as water play with cups or gentle sprinkling. Allow them to choose the temperature of the water.
  5. Environmental Modifications: Consider making environmental modifications to enhance water safety. Install secure fencing or barriers around pools or other bodies of water to prevent unauthorized access. Ensure that all gates and locks are properly maintained and childproofed. If you’re going to a house with a pool, don’t hesitate to ask what safety measures are in place. Offer to bring extra locks or barriers if needed. Good friends and family will happily accommodate your loved one’s special needs!

Remember, the key to water safety is preparation, education, and constant vigilance. By taking proactive steps and implementing these strategies, we can create a safer and more inclusive water experience for individuals with autism in our community.

At ASVC, we are committed to supporting and promoting the well-being of individuals with autism and their families. If you have any questions or need further guidance on water safety or any other autism-related topic, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the summer season responsibly!

Warm regards,
